In this episode aBlogtoWatch Weekly, Ariel, Rick and David join Simon from Escapement24 and our quartet of hosts sit down to discuss some of the latest stories and new releases from this week in the world of watches. In the last episode, there was an off-topic question about how many whales you could fit in Wales, and to start the show, Matt got on the Spirit of Time podcast phone to tell us that he’d done the math and the country of Wales could fit about 185,653,333 blue whales inside it. After sorting out the important bit of business, the conversation turned to watches and how the secondary market for Rolex models in China is crashing, with a 46% drop in price compared to the increased values from last year. After briefly discussing the “man drawer” once more and realizing that Rick doesn’t have a single drawer devoted to his junk, it’s the entire sheds on his farm. A conversation about the most physically painful watches our hosts have ever experienced as well as the various aspects of watches that make them uncomfortable to wear.
From there, the discussion turns to the idea of sustainability in the watch industry and how some eco-friendly buzzwords end up being co-opted by brands in the name of marketing efforts and corporate greenwashing. Given how little physical material goes into the production of aerial watches, pursuing more sustainable manufacturing materials may not be a worthwhile endeavor when the watch industry as a whole is based on the celebration of pleasure rather than a purely economic one. Efficiency. The conversation is then followed by a quick break from Christopher Ward for a surprise interview with Mike France, who gives us a sneak peek at the brand new C60 Trident Pro 300 and what we can expect from the brand’s latest new model. David’s review of a diamond-set digital watch from Casio is now live on the site, and our hosts briefly discuss the motives behind why Casio made such a model in the first place, before ending the show by talking about some of their favorites. Discontinued watches and they want them back.
