In the old days of the watch industry, things were pretty much set for the entire duration of ownership. Sure, there’s always the option to change the personality of the watch by swapping out one strap for another, but that’s about it. Recently, the trend of watch customization, easily interchangeable watch straps/bracelets has seen an impressive growth and the trend is definitely here to stay. Versatility, adaptability to different environments… but the basics, apart from the strap/bracelet, are always here. Certina today presents a concept that goes the extra mile, a collection of fully customizable watches that adapt to hundreds of possible personalities and all situations life has to offer without the need for tools, in seconds, and without breaking the bank. It’s the new Certina DS+ collection of customizable watches, and we’re taking a closer look at it here and with a video review.
One watch, infinite possibilities… We’ve all been in a situation where the watch doesn’t quite fit the environment. A dive watch is not ideal when going to an important business meeting. An elegant timepiece with a thin profile and delicate case is not suitable for weekend activities. And not only is it best to adapt the watch to the current situation, it can also say a lot about your personality. The right watch for the right place… but, importantly, some people cannot afford to own or acquire multiple watches. What if there was a way to completely change your watch to suit your personal preferences or where you go? The answer is; Certina DS+ Collection.
No tool, no complicated operations requiring concentration, no risk of damaging the case or bracelet… and that’s in seconds. Today, with the DS+ concept, Certina is launching a new program based on an ingenious three-part design, where you can easily change the look of the watch to match your current outfit, a special occasion, or whatever you like. And that, with a reliable mechanical movement inside and a reasonable price, especially considering everything you get in return.
The secret behind the Certina DS+ concept lies in the three-part construction, with three separate elements that can be combined and matched – watch head, watch case and strap – with a simple DIY approach. The main reality is the technical concept of interchangeability for the case. It relies on a special rubber strap made of bio-sourced material and two crowns (double crown, which can be seen as a nod to the brand’s historic double security DS). The whole concept starts from a round-shaped central container that houses the movement, the dial and hands, and the main crown. This base watch is available in three different editions with black/silver dial, silver/gold dial and blue/gold dial.
Then comes the conversion steps. And yes, it’s as easy as it gets. The whole idea is a no-tool, DIY concept with a case changing operation in 30 seconds. how Well, it’s as simple as setting the time. To secure the new case to the central container that houses the dial and movement, you only need to unscrew the two crowns. Then, simply remove the outer case, replace the other one, and screw the two crowns back on. Voila! Overall, the DS+ concept is intuitive and easy to use, with a user-oriented feel that feels reliable, safe and perfectly adjusted – as you can see in the video above, it’s a really practical approach and there’s no risk of damaged or scratched parts.
Not only that, there are multiple straps and bracelet options as well. In fact, with the concept base on easy interchangeability and customization, the Sertina comes here with a quick-change system to attach the desired strap or bracelet with a basic yet effective mechanism of quick-release spring bars. There are options for a 3-link steel bracelet or a more vintage mesh “Milanese” bracelet, and several straps can be ordered in leather or #tide material, an eco-friendly option made from recycled marine plastic.
From a design perspective, four different case styles are available. The cushion-shaped Heritage is 43.4mm in diameter, the Round Urban is 40mm with a lightly fluted bezel, the Sport is 41mm, which is round and its bezel has 6 screws. Finally, the Aqua is 43mm and is equipped with a unidirectional bezel to time dives. So your watch can get a vintage, formal, casual or sporty look in seconds. And two-tone options are available for the Urban and Sport cases. And surprisingly, for the best, the central container is designed with resistance in mind, rated at 200m water-resistant… reassuring to say the least. And as all the dials come with a fair amount of Super-LumiNova, the sporty side of the collection is definitely present here too.
At the moment, the Certina DS+ collection is presented in three different kits:
- Aqua & Sport – Dynamic option, with black dial with sunray-brushed finish, silver-colored hands and indexes. An aqua case with rotating bezel and a sports case with screws are included. Also features a black and gray #tied fabric strap and a 3-link steel bracelet with a folding clasp.
- Sport & Urban – A more elegant edition based on two-tone sills, with a silver dial with gold-coloured markers and hands. The kit includes an urban case with an all-steel look and a sport case with a gold PVD bezel. Comes with a dark brown leather strap and stainless steel Milanese bracelet in a presentation box.
- Urban & Heritage – A slightly retro option based on a blue sunray-brushed dial with gold colored markers and hands. The kit is based on a cushion-shaped watch case with four visible screws and a bi-color urban case with a gold PVD bezel. The kit includes a blue NATO fabric strap and a three-row metal bracelet.
As the Certina DS+ collection is based on a reliable and powerful movement, the mechanics are no exception, the Powermatic 80 – an upgraded version of the tried and tested ETA 2824. It comes with an extended power reserve of 80 hours and a Nivacron hairspring that offers excellent resistance to magnetic fields. This movement, visible in the see-through caseback, beats at a frequency of 3Hz and functions include hours, minutes, seconds (with stop-seconds) and date.
Last but not least, the kits are not set in stone and evolution is also taken into account. In fact, thanks to the online configurator, you can easily set up your personal favorite combination at any time and have it sent directly to your home via the Certina online shop. Also, all items can be purchased individually online as well.
As with the brand in general, the Certina DS+ is well priced. picture this, CHF 970 For the kit with Sport and Aqua cases with strap and bracelet, CHF 940 For Urban & Heritage Kit, Or CHF 960 For the Sport & Urban kit, all this with the Powermatic 80 movement… an impressive value proposition.
