Talk about Moonstruck! Introduced just over a year ago, Arnold & Son has given its stunning Luna Magna the red carpet treatment. Luna Magna, one of the largest spherical moon phases incorporated into a wristwatch, stars in gold and platinum cases with sparkling blue aventurine and marble in a jeweled model adorned with sapphires, diamonds, ruthenium chips and opal. The spellbinding Luna Magna Ultimate II version sparkles with the neon-turquoise glow of exotic Paraiba tourmalines and a generous splash of diamonds. Today, the sixth version of Luna Magna wanders into the solar system in a limited edition of 28 pieces with a more subtle palette created with a piece of meteorite and luminous opal.
Arnold & Son’s passion for the Moon has been expressed in the past with models such as the 2016 Perpetual Moon and the Double Hemisphere Perpetual Moon, which feature generous apertures for display and realistically sculpted lunar surfaces. However, the discovery of Luna Magna during Watches & Wonders 2021 has put the moon in a whole new light. To capture the three-dimensionality of our satellite, the Luna Magna (Big Moon) dial incorporates a 12 mm spherical moon in a large aperture at 6 o’clock.
The sixth rendition of the Luna Magna Platinum shares the case size, layout and movement with the previous models, but comes with a more minimal and subtle color scheme. Using a combination of meteorite and opal, the latest version is closer to the more muted tonalities of the moon we perceive from Earth.
Octahedrites, the most common class of iron meteorites, are known for their Widmanstatten pattern, which is revealed when the cut and polished surface of the meteorite is etched with dilute acid. The meteorite’s classic metal crisscrossing patterns are also treated with a sandy shade of PVD to represent the texture of moondust. When exposed to light, the meteorite glows a subtle iridescence, giving the dial a cosmic appeal.
A rotating 12mm three-dimensional moon in the large aperture at 6 o’clock is carved from meteorite on one side and milky white cacholong opal on the other, again representing the various faces and phases of the moon; The dark meteorite half represents the dark side of the Moon, while the luminous opal represents the near side (the side facing us) of the Moon. To improve clarity in the dark, the sphere is treated with Super-LumiNova, which is invisible during the day, but glows a cool blue-green at night. Time is indicated on the afternoon opal sub-dial with classical black Roman numerals and blued openworked hands. Like the moon, the opal dial glows in the dark.
Astronomical accuracy is guaranteed by a precision moon phase complication developed by Arnold & Son. Considering the 29 days, 12 hours, 44 minutes and 2.8 seconds of a complete lunar cycle, Arnold & Son’s precision complication watch would only require an adjustment of one day in 122 years if kept. However, there is a practical way to correct the phases of the moon directly at the crown.
The cool shine of the polished platinum case gives the watch a more moon-like glow and shares dimensions with previous models. Measuring 44mm across, the dial is 15.90mm high and features two box sapphire crystals protecting the movement.
Hand wound caliber
The reverse side of the case offers a side view of the manual-winding A&S1021 caliber and the spherical meteorite and opal moon (hence the domed sapphire crystal). Just above the sphere is a more accurate indicator of the moon’s eight phases (new moon, waxing crescent, first quarter, waxing gibbous, full moon, waning gibbous, last quarter and waning crescent). The movement is 37.6mm in diameter and, including the 3D moon, is 12mm tall; Without the moon, it measures a slim 4.75mm. As with all A&S movements (which are made by La Joux-Perret, part of the Citizen Group and a sister company of Arnold & Son), the finish is traditional, with Geneva stripes radiating from the center of the movement, blued, chamfered screws with polished heads. and circular graining with satin finish on wheels.
