If you don’t have one personally TAG Heuer Formula 1 memory or story, then a close friend or family member almost certainly does. At this point it’s almost cliché to point out that TAG Heuer’s Formula 1 collection is one of the strongest and longest-standing entry-level offerings in Swiss watches. The ubiquitous racing-inspired sports watch collection now adds three bright colors in yellow, red and green, each with a matching colored strap. I got to spend some time with all three and they are a lot of fun and really excellent value.
All three of these Formula 1 watches share the same base model, featuring a quartz chronograph movement in a 43mm stainless steel case and 200m water resistance. For most people looking for a fun, colorful, no-fuss sports watch that can handle a long weekend, the Formula 1 is a no-brainer. These variants feature a fixed black PVD bezel with a classic tachymeter scale.
Of course, the colors are the real story here. The green, yellow and red dials are each done with sunray brushing that only adds to the vibrancy. The dials are truly stunning when seen in metal and TAG has really succeeded in creating an instantly eye-catching color. Beyond the dial and strap colors, there are a few subtleties that distinguish the three different variants.
My personal favorite is the Red Edition, I find the almost ruby color of the dial very well executed. The red edition features rhodium-plated indices/hands filled with white superluminova and a highly visible white lacquer chronograph hand. That white against the red visual theme carries over into the chronograph sub-dials, which feature white circles and guilloche finishes.
The yellow edition has black indexes/hands with white superluminova and a red lacquer chronograph hand with a black circle framing the chronograph sub-dials. Finally, there’s the Green Edition, which is the most “everyday” wearable of the batch. It also features a white lacquer chronograph hand with white superluminova and black indexes/hands. I was trying to put my finger on why I thought the green model represented TAG and finally realized it was because of the red framing of the sub-dials which matched the green dial with the colors of the brand’s logo.
Each of these three new Formula 1 watches comes on a matching rubber strap with a brushed steel pin buckle and has a steel case back with a checkered flag motif.
