Although most people are familiar with the rugged and purpose-built watches of the Prospex collection, Seiko also knows how to make more elegant and scientifically designed watches. This is the aim of the Presage collection, a range that went global in 2016 and has expanded exponentially over the years. In a departure from the traditional “Japanese artistry” models we’ve come to expect from this collection, Seiko launched a sportier and retro-styled range last year called Presage Style 60s, a more accessible 1964-inspired watch. Crown Chronograph. After the power reserve model we saw earlier this year, it’s time to get new colors with the classic date and open heart version SRPH93J1, SRPH95J1 & SSA453J1 references.
The Seiko Presage Style 60s Collection is directly modeled on a series of high-end limited editions, namely SRQ031 and SPB127J1 of 2019, SPB131J1 and SPB129J1 of 2020. All these watches share their common spirit. All watches with this style are modeled after the Seiko Crown Chronograph of 1964, a historically significant piece. Equipped with Japan’s first wrist chronograph, caliber 5719, it is the first step in the construction of a collection of sports timing wristwatches, which has reached completion. Launched its first automatic chronograph in 1969.
A very surprising model with a crown chronograph monopusher style and a dial without sub-counters, displaying only the elapsed seconds centrally. This 38mm steel watch has a blackened rotating bezel, and to measure periods longer than one minute, the wearer must first rotate the bezel and point to the 12 o’clock triangle in front of the minute hand. What remains of the different 2020 and 2021 limited edition watches is the overall look of the dial with its distinctive applied markers and hands, its multi-textured surface, its sharp case and its black bezel.
Presage Style 60s SRPH93J1
The Seiko Presage Style 60s date version has already been released in 4 different editions – SRPG03J1 (white dial, black bezel, gold accents), SRPG05J1 (blue dial and bezel), SRPG07J1 (green dial and bezel) and (SRPG09J1 and bezel). Seiko adds a new edition this year that looks like a variation on the SRPG03J1, but with a bit more boldness in style.
Basically, nothing has changed on the technical side with the same specifications as before. The Presage style 60s SRPH93J1 shares the same features as previous versions, with a pleasing 40.8mm diameter, 12mm height and L2L of 47mm. The design is classic and pays homage to the Crown Chronograph, with its angular lugs, its brushed surfaces and the box-shaped Hardlex crystal on top. Its outer bezel is fixed with a 60-minute scale. Water-resistance is rated at 50 meters.
Presage style 60’s most impressive is the dial. Directly inspired by the 1964 chronograph, it features a combination of multiple textures and face markings and sharp luminous hands. The new SRPH93J1 stands out from the rest of the collection with its silver-white dial, its silver-colored accents and a bezel with a burgundy colored metallic insert. Overall, a very good color combination.
Inside the case is Seiko’s entry-level automatic caliber 4R35 with a frequency of 3Hz and a power reserve of 41h. It looks under a see-through caseback with an industrial look (in keeping with the price range). This version is worn on a 3-link stainless steel bracelet with a folding clasp and push-button release. This new reference SRPH93J1 is now available from retailers and is not limited. It has a price EUR 540.

“Stealth” Presage Style 60s SRPH95J1
In addition to the cool red-colored model presented above, Seiko adds another new member to the Presage Style 60s family, this time with a darker and bolder look. The SRPH95J1 “Stealth” is black from head to strap. The case, with identical proportions of 40.8mm x 12mm, has a black “titanium carbon” coating, matched by an equally black metallic insert for the bezel.
The dark theme continues on the dial, with an all-black finish, as does the date disc. The hands and markers are silver, for good contrast, and the watch is worn on a NATO-like black leather strap. Overall, a very tasteful look that adds modernity to a retro-style watch. Inside is the same movement as above, Caliber 4R35. This new Seiko Presage Style 60s Stealth SRPH95J1 is now available, unlimited and retails here EUR 590.
Quick facts: 40.8mm x 12mm – Steel case, brushed, black coated – Hardlex crystal – 50m water resistance – Black dial, black bezel – Caliber 4R35, automatic – NATO-like leather strap with black coated hardware – Available now – EUR 590
Presage Style 60s Open Heart SSA453J1
In addition to the 4 date versions presented last year, Seiko also introduced 3 models with so-called open-heart dials, which exposed the control organ of the watch. Previously available with an ivory dial (SSA423J1), black dial (SSA425J1) or brown low gold PVD case (SSA426J1), now a more modern and sportier edition joins the family.
The new SSA453J1 is identical to last year’s models when it comes to specifications. Its case is 40.8mm in diameter by 12.8mm thick, with a box-shaped Hardlex crystal and 50m water-resistance. Design-wise, it shares many elements with the above-dated versions, however, the dial has been transformed so that the movement’s balance wheel is now visible. Inside is the same base movement, but here named the 4R39 and still running at 3Hz and with a power reserve of 41h. An important difference is that it has a 24-hour sub-counter, which is used as a night/day indicator.
For this year, the Presage Style 60s Open Heart is now available with a blue dial and blue bezel and is worn on a very cool distressed NATO-like beige leather strap. This new reference SSA453J1 is now available from retailers such as Unlimited and Retail EUR 590.
