As part of the partnership between the two brands, day, this year Commemorating the 50th anniversary of the legendary Porsche 911 Carrera, which made its debut at the Paris Motor Show on October 5, 1972, a new limited edition Carrera Chronograph has been launched. These are TAG Heuer Carrera x Porsche RS 2.7 The limited edition watches come in colorways that pay homage to two of the twenty-seven colors. Glasserblau (glazier blue) and red gold model Indian Red (Guard’s Red), they offer attractive and fun options for many Porsche enthusiasts. (Or Porsche enthusiast watch collectors?) And with total production numbers for each watch in the hundreds, these are limited editions only.
The base watch here is the 42mm Carrera Chronograph released in 2020 with a design inspired by the original 1963 model. These feature a classic tri-compax layout with chronograph counters at 3 and 9 o’clock and a running seconds hand plus date window at 6 o’clock. Rather than giving the running seconds a full-scale sub-dial, the dial manages to avoid the burden of having three sub-dials and a date window. Inside is the Caliber Heuer 02 movement, which operates at 28,800 vph and has an 80-hour power reserve. With the basics of both watches out of the way, let’s take a look at each, starting with the steel variant.
TAG Heuer Carrera x Porsche RS 2.7 Comes with a matching steel bracelet in steel and, more interestingly, a white and blue fabric strap with matching Porsche emblem. I keep this watch on the strap most of the time Most of the time it takes into account the aesthetic harmony, but it is very soft and comfortable. On the dial side, the hands are made of blue lacquer and lume, while the indices and seconds hand are rhodium-plated. Maybe I could easily have fun with some color schemes and combinations but I think this is the only implementation Glasserblau Exudes a very effortlessly attractive crispness and coolness.
There are subtle and more overt Porsche references throughout the watch. You’d be forgiven for not immediately noticing that the framing around the chronograph sub-dial at 3 o’clock is designed to evoke rims, but it’s almost impossible not to notice the Carrera text and stripe on the left side of the case.
Where the steel model turns blue, the rose gold repeats a Indian Red Aka the Guard’s Red color scheme. This model uses red touches and lacquering with red-gold plated indices on the dial as well as the engraved Carrera logo on the left side of the case. I can only imagine that the extra cost of a solid gold bracelet would make it a tougher sell than it needs to be, so it only comes on a very nice (and very red) alligator leather strap. Although the design is a bit divisive, I appreciate when a watch sticks to its theme, I can definitely see the use of such a punchy red color here. However, only 250 of these red gold Carrera x Porsche RS 2.7 watches will be produced, so this is a very important item.
Well designed and executed, the pair pays a fitting tribute to a car as iconic as the Porsche 911 Carrera RS 2.7, especially on an occasion like its 50th anniversary. The TAG Heuer Carrera x Porsche RS 2.7 in Steel (Ref. CBN2016.EB0275) will be limited to 500 pieces priced at $7,750 and will be limited to 250 pieces priced in red gold (ref.
