The Portuguese family needs no further introduction by IWC, one of the Schaffhausen-based brand’s most acclaimed collections. Born in the 1930s following the request of two Portuguese businessmen and sailing enthusiasts, the nautical-inspired watch has become a classic that has remained unchanged over the years. Today, IWC introduces new versions of the Portugieser Automatic and the Portugieser Chronograph, two of the most popular models in the collection, that not only look attractive but also perfectly fit the nautical theme of this family of watches. Blue” dials.
The combination of silver-white dial and blue accents is one of the most classic style – if not the most iconic combination – you will find on an IWC Portuguese. Adding a strong nautical touch to already nautical-related watches, this color scheme has a strong appeal and is found in many members of the Portugieser family – the classic Automatic 7-Day, the recently updated chronograph reference 3716, the more compact Automatic 40 or even the sportier Yacht-Club. There is also a Bucherer Blue edition of the chronograph with the addition of Blue. In the same vein, the brand’s portfolio has long featured the so-called Panda dials with contrasting sub-counters.
Today, the brand is taking the two concepts and mixing them to give birth to these Panda Blue editions based on the all-time classic Portugese Automatic Reference 5007 and Portugese Chronograph 3716. Aided by clarity with a bit more boldness and a stronger contrast, both watches have a polished lacquer finish on their white dial – thus contrasting with the classic silver-white dial with a metallic effect and thus closer to the watches of the 150th anniversary collection – and come with blue Arabic numerals and leaf-shaped hands. . , as well as deep blue sub-counters with an azure finish. And yes, a bit of inspiration from marine deck observation watches can definitely be found here.
IWC Portugese Automatic Blue Panda IW500715
The “Big Boy” of the Portugieser collection, the automatic version, is characterized by the combination of a large case with a very powerful movement – a pendant to the Big Pilot’s Watch, simply dressed in nautical clothing. The case here measures 42.3mm in diameter and 14.1mm in height. Inside, and filling the case to the max, is the in-house caliber 52010 with a wide rotor with a Pellaton winding system and a 168-hour power reserve (corresponding to 7 days) controlled by a gauge on the side of the dial.
While this new Panda Blue edition may at first appear to be a simple evolution of the classic IW500705 model (silver dial, blue accents), it actually features a different dial with a glossy surface and deep blue contrasting counters. Power reserve and running seconds. The time is read thanks to classic Portuguese numerals and a railroad minute track. Completing the blue dial is a formal alligator strap in blue, closed with a folding clasp. This IWC Portugese Automatic Blue Panda IW500715 is part of the Perpetual Collection and retails for EUR 13,300 (Same price as other steel versions).

IWC Portugese Chronograph Blue Panda IW371620
The second in this new sub-collection is this Panda Blue Classic Portugese Chronograph 3716. A cornerstone of the collection, as well as the most accessible model in the family, this watch has remained unchanged for nearly 25 years. Updated in 2020 with a new manufacture movement, thus becoming the 3716 (but visually identical to its predecessor the 3714), it measures a reasonable 41mm x 13.1mm and is characterized by its vertical display.
Inside is the ValFleurier-made caliber 69355, an automatic integrated movement with a column wheel, now visible under a sapphire caseback. Again, this new panda blue version looks close to the existing silver-plated model with blue accents (reference IW371605), but actually features a glossy white lacquer dial with a different color and surface. The other update is related to the strap. For now, we’ve seen the Portugese chronograph worn on alligator straps, on a steel bracelet, or on eco-friendly straps. It is here mounted on a blue textured rubber strap with a pin buckle, adding to the sportiness of this edition. It is also part of the permanent collection and retails EUR 8,950 (Same price as other classic steel models).
