With a knack for creating sensually shaped, understated, beautifully designed watches and movements, it’s hard to find someone who doesn’t love Laurent Ferrier watches. When the maestro turned his hand to the luxury sports watch genre, he turned his attention to the 1970s, when his passion for motorsports was at its peak, and combined the smooth, elegant, flowing lines that characterized his work to create the Grand Sport. . Powered by a high-end, hand-finished tourbillon movement, the Grand Sport Tourbillon debuted in steel with an integrated rubber strap, followed by a model with an integrated steel bracelet. Today, the watch falls into the realm of ultra-luxury sports watches, dressed head-to-toe in seductive matte 5N red gold with a gracefully graduated chocolate-colored dial.
Launched in 2019, the Grand Sport Tourbillon was inspired by the two founders’ (Laurent Ferrier and François Cervanin) mutual passion for car racing. The Grand Sport Tourbillon’s curvaceous lines are inspired by the elegant contours of a race car, and its power is derived from the high-performance engine, the LF619.01 tourbillon caliber with a double balance spring.
Same as 12 of the brandTh The Anniversary, Grand Sport Tourbillon appears in a solid 5N red gold suit with an integrated bracelet. As with previous steel versions, the 44mm case diameter and 13.40mm height in red gold increase the weight to 310gr. With its smooth barrel-shaped case and cushion-shaped bezel, the watch emits a distinctive 1970s vibe and amplifies its dimensions with a clever play of convex and concave shapes and rounded edges. Integrated crown guards protect the signature onion crown to ensure the case’s 100m water resistance.
Using different brushed finishes – circular on the bezel, vertical in the center of the case – the matte case looks sportier and warmer than the polished case. The three-link bracelet features satin-brushed finishes with brightly polished bevels on the central links.
Gradient chocolate dial
Transitioning from a light chocolate tone in the center to darker at the edges, the warm brown of the gradient dial works beautifully with the red gold. The signature drop-shaped hour markers and assegai-shaped hands are crafted in red gold, treated with white Super-LumiNova and applied to an opaline dial. To accommodate the small seconds counter at 6 o’clock, the markers at 5 and 7 o’clock are noticeably shorter. Emphasizing the round shape of the watch, the dial dome is protected by a sapphire crystal.
In keeping with the brand’s understatement, the tourbillon is not featured on the dial. Visible on the case back, the hand-wound, one-minute tourbillon movement is exquisitely finished with 30 hand-worked internal facets, polished countersinks and contemporary horizontal satin-brushed bridges with ruthenium treatment. The movement stores an 80h power reserve and beats at a frequency of 3Hz. Equipped with a double balance spring, the movement in the original classic tourbillon won the men’s watch prize at the GPHG in 2010.
