Released last year, the Zenith Defy Xtreme is the Le Local-based brand’s most daring and robust watch yet, with a clear look and motionless ability to record elapsed time with great precision. With such an aggressive, bold look and the ability to mix and match materials, it’s the perfect vehicle for collaborations and racing spirit. such as Official timekeeper and founding partner of Xtreme E, an off-road racing series that uses electric SUVs in remote areas of the world, Zenith has released several special edition models and the latest, the Zenith Defy Xtreme E Copper X Prix.
Teams are off the beaten track to South America for the latest race of the 2022 Extreme E Championship, the first ever electric rally racing championship. One of the world’s leading copper mining regions and an innovative and sustainable approach to its operations, Chile’s Atacama Desert set the scene for the unveiling of the watchmaker’s third special edition watch commemorating the Extreme E race. And the collection’s classic innovative materials are now matched with earthy tones that recall the region’s copper mines, incorporating recycled and upcycled elements from the Championship.
The new Zenith Defy Xtreme E Copper X-Prix shares many elements with the classic version of the Defy Extreme and mostly updates the materials and colors. This version is made of lightweight yet durable carbon fiber, including the crown and chronograph pushers. The pusher protectors as well as the twelve-sided bezel are made of contrasting microblasted titanium. The dial, which reveals the movement through an openworked and tinted sapphire crystal, has copper-brown tones that evoke the dry, rocky terrains and copper mines of the Chilean desert. The display features central hours/minutes, a small seconds at 9 o’clock, a 60-second and 30-minute counter, and a crazy central seconds hand that provides a measurement of 1/100ths of a second and displays one rotation per second.
Under the hood of the Defy Extreme E Copper X Prix is the in-house, automatic, chronometer-rated caliber El Primero 9004. The main highlight is pushing the signature high-frequency concept to a whole new level with a two-regulator. Architecture. One beats at 5Hz and controls the time. The other, activated independently and in conjunction with the chronograph, beats at 50Hz or 360,000 vibrations per hour and is responsible for 1/100th of the second chrono. The movement is also visible through a sapphire display back emblazoned with the Copper X Prix logo.
The races also put sustainability and environmental awareness at the fore, and this edition of the Zenith Defy Extreme wears a rubber strap filled with material from the upcycled Continental CrossContact tires used in the first season’s races. Here, it features a black rubber central element surrounded by a brown Cordura-effect rubber lining. It is delivered with two additional straps in black rubber and black Velcro, which can be easily swapped out with a quick strap-change mechanism.
Zenith Defy Xtreme E Copper Xprex is produced in 20 pcs and priced at CHF 26,900. For more details, please visit www.zenith-watches.com.
