One of the most prominent of the Zenith lineup is the reference A386, one of three early automatic chronographs launched in 1969, equipped with the famous high-frequency El Primero caliber. Unlike its siblings (A384 and A385), the round A386 has a tri-color dial with gray and blue sub-dials that become its identity. In a similar vein, the global drive to raise awareness of breast cancer is associated with the color pink. In the brand’s latest show of support, Zenith dresses its classic 38mm Chronomaster Original in pink and donates 20% of the proceeds from sales to the world’s leading non-profit breast cancer organization: the Susan G. Komen Foundation.
Breast Cancer Awareness Month
Since 1985, October has been declared as ‘Breast Cancer Awareness Month’. To garner support for the cause, initiatives such as the 2021 Pink Dial Project were launched, where 19 brands, including Zenith, offered watches with pink elements for auction. This year, Zenith will support the Susan G. Komen Foundation, the world’s largest nonprofit source of funding for the fight against breast cancer, with more than USD 3.3 billion in investments in research, support and education in more than 60 countries.
The watch chosen to represent the cause is the Zenith’s Chronomaster Original, a special pink edition based on the classic 38mm El Primero 1969 (A386) restored in 2021. Closer to the original than the discontinued Chronomaster is the 38mm unisex case of the Chronomaster Original. An almost exact copy of the legendary A386 with bezel-less construction, folded crown, thin casebands, faceted lugs and simple pump-style pushers with compact dimensions.
A practically non-existent bezel means there’s plenty of room to enjoy the dial, which stands out in its stunning pink sun-brushed metallic colour. Instead of the A386’s classic tri-color registers, the model is pink and highlights slightly overlapping sub-dials with a snail background and black markings. The applied rhodium-plated hour markers are faceted and treated with Super-LumiNova. Historically correct fonts and logos now anchor the watch’s origins with a pink background and black numerals along with a date window at 4:30.
Equipped with the upgraded, in-house, high-frequency chronograph caliber 3600, the tri-compax display and central chronograph seconds hand (white) differ slightly from the original A386. For starters, the central chronograph hand rotates around the dial in 10 seconds instead of 60 seconds, and the sub-dials relay different information. The classic small seconds counter at 9 o’clock remains unchanged, but at 3 o’clock the counter now records 60 seconds of elapsed time and at 6 o’clock registers 60 minutes. The original tachymeter scale has been substituted to 1/10Th Second chronograph scale (printed in black on the edge).
Caliber El Primero 3600
While the watch’s exteriors are a throwback to 1969’s A386, the historical base movement with its column wheel and horizontal coupling architecture has been retained but updated to reflect the 21.St– Century standards. Caliber El Primero 3600, operating at a frequency of 26,000vph/5Hz, provides improved chronometric measurements down to 1/10Th A seconds and chrono gives the seconds hand its smooth sweeping motion. Its increased capacity increases the power reserve of 60 hours.
Replacing the original “ladder” design of the steel bracelet, the watch comes on a comfortable steel bracelet with brushed and polished surfaces and solid links with a double-folding clasp.
