While all brands share certain key characteristics, few have such strong signatures that you can quickly spot the watch maker across the room. In the realm of luxury, there is Audemars Piguet and their renowned integrated style. Royal OakCartier and their blue sapphire cabochon crowns, and Rolex and their iconic fluted bezel or “Pepsi” GMT bezel—but at the entry level, brands with serious signature styles have become scarce and recognizable.
A brand to counter that narrative social, which has lasting recognition for its watches, many of which feature a Bauhaus design inspired by the official clocks of the Swiss railways. First with the original evo, and now the evo2 with its “rounder, more organic case” as modern bearers of this design history, Mondine timepieces quickly channel classic minimalist style with a strong Swiss signature through their famous red second hands. If you want to know more about this history, you should read Roger Rüger’s hands-on with the evo2 SBB automatic, where he traveled on his own Swiss locomotive journey with one on the wrist.
This summer, Mondine is once again enhancing the evo2 collection in a subtle, yet noticeable way, introducing an upsize edition of the watch, now at 43mm. The new size is available with either a deep black display or a crisp white dial; It joins the standard 40mm and 35mm options already in the brand’s catalog.
As with previous editions of the evo2, the 43mm case is produced in steel, with its edges nicely polished. The case’s faceted lugs offer a no-nonsense appeal typical of Bauhaus style watches, while the red-tinted “M” crown adds a playful pop of color to the straight silhouette.
On the dial, applied hour markers add texture and depth to the simple time-only configuration. The baton style of these markers matches the visible shape of the hour and minute hand, while the slight taper of the latter adds to the overall visual appeal and diversity of the display. In standard Mondaine fashion, the brand’s renowned Swiss train station inspired seconds hand works slowly on the dial, ensuring that the watch’s key signature is on display with its circular tip and red hue. A Swiss Ronda 513 quartz movement powers the watch’s consistent operation.
The new 43mm evo2 models are available on a steel Milanese mesh bracelet or a choice of black “vegan grape leather” strap, which is made of 75% composite material and 25% recycled PET. Both options feature a quick-change system that ensures ease of quickly changing your strap choice.
The evo2 is available now through Mondine’s website and through authorized retailers, starting at Rs $355.
