MeisterSinger’s one-hand watches are a refreshing departure from traditional clocks and inspired by the original single-hand display of medieval clock towers. Founded in 2001 by Manfred Brassler, the German brand is characterized by its minimalist, award-winning Bauhaus designs. tapping into the more historical style associated with the early 19Th-Century pocket watches, the latest Meistersinger Pangea 365 takes on a vintage look with a warm ivory-colored dial, an elegant typeface, and the brand’s signature single-hand display for hours and minutes.
Pangea 365 belongs to a sub-collection represented by slightly more complex models equipped with day and day/date functions. Greek word Pangaia means “All the earthAnd 300 million years ago the term Pangea was used to define the period when the entire landmass of the Earth was formed into one large mass or supercontinent. I’m not sure why this special edition with no day or date functions and a very vintage vibe was listed in the Pangea collection, or for that matter why the collection got its name, but it certainly doesn’t detract an inch from the new Pangea 365’s attractive dial.
One thing the Pangea models share is the case shape, material and size. The Pangea 365 comes in a 40mm stainless steel case with a height of 10.5mm and can be easily modified with a large flute or onion crown. As with other Pangea cases, the bezel is very slim and gives more space to the dial, and all surfaces are polished. A sapphire crystal protecting the dial, an exhibition caseback with six screws and 50m water resistance complete the exterior of the watch.
As a brand that has received 34 design accolades – Red Dot, German Design, IF Design and Good Design Awards – since 2001, Meistersinger’s designers understand the importance of typography and the importance of color to enhance legibility. In fact, MeisterSinger works with Lucas Schneider, a specialized typeface designer, to customize fonts for the brand. An elegant cursive typeface is used for the inscriptions on the dial, while the numerals are chosen in a typeface that evokes the hand-painted numbers on historic pocket watches.
As our readers know, most MeisterSinger dials display single-digit numbers with a 0 (01, 02, 03, etc.) to create more balance. Pangea adheres to this tradition, but with a delightful twist that gives the watch more personality. Except for the Arabic numeral 12, all the numerals on the warm ivory-colored dial are placed at an angle and some are upside down.
While some may be concerned about the accuracy of a single hand watch, time readings can be consulted down to the minute thanks to precise tracks and a restrained but highly effective use of color. Each hour is set next to a blue index that is thicker and longer than the black markers that indicate the minutes between one hour and the next. At the edge of the dial, there is also a 24-hour scale with thin light blue and red markers at 15, 30 and 45 minute intervals. Although it may sound confusing, reading time becomes natural once you understand the dynamics.
A long black central arrow-tipped hand indicates the hours and minutes. The hours are conventionally displayed with a black Arabic numeral highlighted with a light blue marker, while the minutes are color coded for added clarity: every five-minute interval is indicated by a small black marker; Quarter length, slightly thicker black marker; And half an hour by the black marker even more. The 24-hour scale is also color coded, marking the quarters with a small red dash and the half hour with a faint blue.
Another delightful detail of the Meistersinger Pangea 365 is the Pangea 365’s unusually long arrow-tipped arm. The needle-shaped hand with its extra-long overhang resembles that seen on historic pocket watches, and the central black solid circle is flanked by two counterweights. Matching the color code used for the time indications, the Meister Singer logo is black and the Pangaea 365 inscription is light blue.
Powering the Pangea 365 is a Swiss Sellita SW200 automatic movement modified for MeisterSinger’s single-hand watch display. Beating at 28,800vph, the movement offers hours and minutes with a 38h power reserve.
