For this episode of aBlogtoWatch Weekly, have all returned from their recent travels, so it’s back to our usual trio of hosts, Ariel, Rick and David, joined by Sylvain Berneron, creative director at Breitling. To kick off the show, our hosts briefly discussed the aerial trip and David’s experience with Norkine at last week’s Omega event, where they didn’t show the new Speedmaster X-33 Marstimer but only the novelties presented several months ago. From there, it dived deeper into stainless steel sports watches in response to an opinion piece written by David, in which he argued that there are too many steel sports models when the material has inherent flaws. Sylvain discusses how the noble meaning of a stainless steel sports watch has changed over the years, before commenting that stainless steel is a quintessentially Swiss material. Many different aesthetic and functional properties.
After discussing all things stainless steel, a question from Rick about strap material options turned the conversation to titanium. Sylvain offers some insight into the different grades of titanium used in watchmaking, how they differ from one another, and why grade 2 is his personal favorite. After discussing two of the most utilitarian metals used in watchmaking, our hosts take the opportunity to talk about the Norkine Wild One, a new sports watch that features a case made entirely out of metal. After breaking down its unique shock-absorbing design and analyzing its placement in the greater industry, our hosts turned their attention to the Omega Seamaster Planet Ocean Ultra Deep and whether or not it’s sure to offer a massive depth rating. Still doesn’t look like a very special piece of dive equipment. After Sylvain revealed the specific depth at which a person can more-or-less be crushed, and that most of today’s dive watches are more than capable of surviving it, our hosts ended the show by talking about how watches like the Omega Ultra Deep can often be. They serve as ways for brands to showcase their technology and explore the language of design in a way that has broader appeal outside the collector and enthusiast space.
